In recent years, we have seen time and time again that a web server that we support is essentially "brought to its knees". Users notice this in that their request to the affected website is not answered and is acknowledged after some time with a server error (usually "503 – Service unavailable").

This can be caused by what is known as a DDoS attack (Distributed Denial of Service). The affected web server is targeted with a flood of simultaneous requests from different sources with the aim of overloading it so that it is no longer capable of responding. In most cases, only rebooting and blocking the requesting clients will help. This kind of failure can sometimes last several hours and result in a significant loss of sales, for example in a online shop.
