Always use supported software
The Content Management System (CMS) TYPO3 has fixed update and support periods. Behind TYPO3 is not only a large developer community, which is constantly developing the CMS, but also a registered company - TYPO3 GmbH, which offers additional services.
The developer community supports each LTS version for 3 years with regular security and maintenance updates. In addition, a new, stable major version of TYPO3 CMS is released every 18 months, which is being further developed at the same time. There are always two stable, running versions of TYPO3.
But not only your CMS should be maintained and updated at regular intervals - blogs, plugins and extensions must also be checked for security and functionality at regular intervals. Installing security patches and new versions should be just as much a part of everyday work as answering e-mails.
Extended support periods for outdated LTS versions
If an update is not carried out in time due to time or financial reasons, you have the option of requesting an extension of the support period (ELTS) for your TYPO3 installation. The support period is then extended for up to two more years and you will continue to receive maintenance and security updates during this time.
Websites running on version 6.2 ELTS or on version 7.6 LTS should be migrated to a newer version with long-term support - version 6.2 ELTS by mid-Q1 2018 at the latest and version 7.6 LTS by the end of Q3 2018 at the latest.
Since April 4th, 2017, there is a new TYPO3 version with long-term support, "TYPO3 v8 LTS" (Version 8.7), which will be further developed and updated until at least March 2020.
